Indra Sjafri, The coach of the Indonesian National Team, Shin Tae-yong , gives full support to Indra Sjafri who is entrusted with coaching the U-23 squad for the 2023 SEA Games. Shin Tae-yong is sure there will be no problems with the process of selecting the team. Indra Sjafri is entrusted to go down the mountain to train the U-23 Indonesian National Team because Shin Tae-yong will be focused on the U-20 squad. Understandably, the U-20 national team will face two big agendas namely the 2023 U-20 Asian Cup and the 2023 U-20 World Cup.
PSSI did not want Shin Tae-yong\’s focus to be divided, so they decided Indra Sjafri to train again. This will be the first edition for Indra Sjafri returning to train after serving as PSSI Technical Director since 2020. \”I have worked with Coach Indra for a long time, there shouldn\’t be any problems. Communication has been good until now,\” said Shin Tae-yong .
Coach Shin Tae-yong also emphasized the division of tasks with Indra Sjafri according to the team being trained. So, Indra Sjafri was given the freedom to form the U-23 National Team for the 2023 SEA Games. \”Indeed, because of clashes in the U-23 and U-20. However, my focus is on the U-20 at the moment. Coach Indra being the U-23 coach is not a problem,\” said Shin Tae-yong. The 2023 SEA Games will be an opportunity for the Indonesian National Team to win a gold medal in the sport of soccer. The last time this achievement was achieved was in the 1991 edition.
The 2023 SEA Games will be the second edition of Indra Sjafri with the U-23 Indonesian National Team. Previously, the coach from West Sumatra had coached the 2019 SEA Games squad. At that time, Indra Sjafri was able to present a silver medal for the sport of football. In the final match, the U-23 Indonesian national team gave up 0-3 to Vietnam. After that, Indra Sjafri decided to leave coaching. PSSI appointed Indra Sjafri as Technical Director in 2020.
Indra Sjafri has full experience as an age-level coach for the Indonesian National Team, starting from U-16 in 2011, U-19 in 2012-204 and 2017-2018, and U-22 in 2019. During his time as coach of the Indonesian national team at the age level, Indra Sjafri presented the 2013 U-19 AFF Cup for the U-19 national team and the 2019 U-22 AFF Cup for the U-22 national team.
The U-23 Indonesian National Team , which will be prepared to appear at the 2023 SEA Games, will conduct a Training Camp in Jakarta on March 1-16. Indonesian football observer, Budi Kesit Handoyo, said that the method of summoning players by the coaching team under the command of Indra Sjafri was correct. Previously, Indra Sjafri said he would summon as many players as possible in order to get really quality players to appear at the SEA Games which will be held next May.
\”Yes, as explained by Indra Sjafri earlier, he will summon as many players as possible for selection, including players from League 2 whose age is indeed included, I think that is good,\” said Kesit Budi Handoyo to madisonsportsgroup, Tuesday ( 28 / 02/2023).
By summoning many players from League 2 or from other castes, Kesit said this could have a positive impact on the existing young players. All quality young players will get the opportunity to defend the red and white and can feel the competition in Pelatnas.
Kesit also agreed with the appointment of Indra Sjafri as the head coach of the U-23 Indonesian National Team at the SEA Games. Previously, all age groups were the responsibility of Shin Tae-Yong and Indra Sjafri only served as Technical Director.
In the middle of last month, PSSI appointed Indra Sjafri to coach the U-23 Indonesian National Team which will compete in the SEA Games.\”I think Indra Sjafri is very appropriate to coach the U-23 national team. Indra\’s track record as a national coach is quite good. At least he understands the character of the players who will inhabit his squad later. As Director of PSSI he will know what to do,\” he said . Regarding only two months of preparation, Kesit emphasized that enough was not enough, the Indonesian National Team had to be ready.
According to Kesit, for the SEA Games, Indonesia can always compete with Thailand and Vietnam, which have always been regular champions. One of the solutions to get the best performance, Indra Sjafri must find a quality trial opponent. \”Yes, enough is not enough indeed. But, if the preparation for two months is carried out continuously, it might be enough. It\’s just a matter of how the two months are really optimized. The most important thing is the quality of the trials. Choosing a team against a quality trial will be very good for the team U-23 Indonesia,\” said Kesit.
The U-22 Indonesian National Team has a target of winning a gold medal at the 2023 SEA Games. It is also hoped that Garuda Muda will be strengthened by the best players. Including by the Indonesian national team players who are now playing abroad. Elkan Baggott is one of several names that are expected to be able to defend the U-22 Indonesian National Team at the 2023 SEA Games. However, Elkan Baggott\’s chances of appearing in Cambodia next May are quite small. League One, where Baggot competes, will only finish the season in the first week of May 2023.
This was conveyed by the coach of the U-22 Indonesian National Team, Indra Sjafri after leading the U-22 Indonesian National Team training session in Field A, Gelora Bung Karno, Jakarta, Thursday (2/3/2023) evening WIB. \”I don\’t have any certainty regarding Elkan Baggott , but he is still playing in England until May 7, 2023,\” said Indra Sjafri.
Elkan Baggott currently plays for English League One club, Cheltenham Town. The 20-year-old player is starting to get a place at the club nicknamed The Robins. Indra Sjafri also seemed pleased with the developments experienced by Elkan Baggott. He doesn\’t even feel the need to interfere with Baggot\’s development for the sake of the 2023 SEA Games. \”It\’s too risky to disturb Elkan, let her compete there,\” said Indra.
However, Indra still does not want to rule out all possibilities. He will also accept with open arms if Cheltenham Town allows Elkan Baggott to strengthen the U-22 Indonesian National Team at the 2023 SEA Games. \”If the club allows it, go ahead, but I prioritize him to stay at the club,\” he said.
Currently, the U-22 Indonesian National Team has 34 players. They underwent a training camp in Jakarta since Wednesday (1/3/2023). However, most of them are not players who are projected to become core players in the U-22 Indonesian National Team at the 2023 SEA Games. In fact, 17 of the 34 names come from League 2 clubs. Several star players such as Beckham Putra, Bagas Kaffa, Ernando Ari, Rizky Ridho, Alfeandra Dewangga, and several other players are expected to join when the BRI Liga 1 2022/2023 has finished the season.
The 1977 SEA Games became the debut for the Indonesian national team in football at the Southeast Asian Games. Previously, when it was still called the Peninsular Games, Indonesia had indeed failed to participate. So far, Indonesian football is still proud of having scored two gold medals in the sport of soccer at the SEA Games. The gold medal was won by the Indonesian national team in the 1987 and 1991 editions of the SEA Games .
In the 1987 edition, the figure of local coach Bertje Matulapelwa became a key figure. He became the coach of the Indonesian national team at that time. Meanwhile, the figure of a foreign coach, Anatoly Polosin, contributed to the gold medal at the 1991 SEA Games. Since the last gold medal won in Manila, Philippines 32 years ago, no more gold medals from soccer have come to Indonesia.
At the 2023 SEA Games , the public is again hoping that the gold medal can be brought home. This hope rests on a local coach, Indra Sjafri, who is given the responsibility of managing the U-23 Indonesian National Team which will compete in Cambodia in a few months.
The 1987 SEA Games became an interesting moment for national football. At that time Indonesia was appointed as the host. The gold medal from the sport of football is clearly targeted. PSSI at that time entrusted the coaching chair to Bertje Matulapelwa. Ribut Waidi became a star figure at the 1987 SEA Games. He scored the only goal in the final round. Ribut then immortalized his services through a statue which is located not far from the Jatidiri Stadium, Semarang.
Success was very sweet. It was the first gold medal for the Indonesian national team at the SEA Games, and it was won at home, Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium. One more thing that made that moment very sweet was that in the final match, Bertje Matulapelwa\’s team successfully defeated the Malaysian national team.
Rahmad Darmawan is one of the few special coaches who has recently been born in Indonesian football. Rahmad also got a special opportunity. He became the first local coach to be entrusted with managing the U-23 Indonesian National Team at two editions of the SEA Games. Namely at the 2011 and 2013 SEA Games.
Rahmad\’s achievements were not bad either. In the two editions of the SEA Games, Garuda Muda managed by RD was able to win two silver medals. This note from Rahmad Darmawan will soon be repeated by Indra Sjafri. It is known that Indra also coached the U-23 Indonesian National Team at the 2019 SEA Games.
The Indonesian national team had a tough task at the 1989 SEA Games . They were given the burden of defending the title they had won at home two years earlier. PSSI at that time also took an unusual step. They appointed three coaches at the same time to lead the Red-White Team. The three figures in question are Muhammad Basri, Iswadi Idris, and Abdul Kadir. Unfortunately, the experiment was not successful. The Indonesian national team failed to win a gold medal at the 1989 SEA Games. Mustaqim et al had to be content with returning to their homeland with a bronze medal.
The Indonesian national team that appeared in the SEA Games had long been dominated by foreign coaches. Since using the trio of Muhammad Basri, Iswadi Idris and Abdul Kadir, PSSI has only returned to trusting local coaches in the 2001 edition of the SEA Games. At that time the name Benny Dollo was appointed to coach the Indonesian National Team. Garuda could only occupy the fourth position at that time.
Benny Dollo is known to have passed away, Wednesday (1/2/2023). After managing the Indonesian national team at the 2001 SEA Games, Bendol\’s career was brilliant in national football. Before Bendol arrived, there were names of foreign coaches such as Anatoly Polosin, Ivan Toplak, Romano Matte, Henk Wullems, and Bernard Schumm who had coached the Indonesian national team at the SEA Games.
