Remco Evenepoel won the Liège-Bastogne-Liège one-day race on Sunday. On the penultimate ascent of the day, he launched a brutal assault to claim his first Classic Monument title.

The 22-year-old is the first Belgian to win the oldest classic in 11 years. Strikes near the top of the Côte de la Redoute, 30 kilometers from the target, and never looks back. His compatriots Quinten Hermans (Intermarche-Wanty Gobert Materiaux) and Wout Van Art (Jumbo-Visma) finished second and third after 257.5 km.

Evenepoel win came after his Quick-Step Alpha teammate Vynil Julian Alaphilippe fell to the ground. The world bike champion fell into a ditch 62km from the line and was whisked away in an ambulance.

French television channel France 3 reported that the driver was conscious and suffered a broken rib. “I hope everyone involved is doing well,” said Evenepoel, who shed tears of joy after crossing the finish line.

The Liege-Bastogne-Liège Bike Race Champion Evenepoel Dream Come True

“This is the race I’ve been dreaming of since I started cycling,” said the former Belgium U16 footballer. “I wanted to blow something up on the Côte de la Redoute. And I did, I was able to get on the train.”

Lige-Bastogne-Liège attended a fierce and very tight race. Meanwhile, Bernal as rival behind Evenepoel. Who is considered one of the brightest talents of the new generation. His rival failed to arrange a decent comeback.

Evenepoel chased the breakaway riders one by one, knocking out the last of them. French racer Bruno Armirail at the foot of the final climb of the Côte de la Roche aux Faucons.

After a few racers tried their luck to chase Evenepoel alone. Reduces the number of pursuers selecting a 48 second sprint to complete.

One of the pre-race favourites, two-time Tour de France champion Tadej Pogacar. He did not enter the race after the death of his mother-in-law.

Remco Evenepoel (Fast Step Alpha Vinyl): “Today I feel the best Remco is back”

Remco Evenepoel is very happy to win Liège-Bastogne-Liège like this. This is a race that Evenepoel desperately wants to win once in his life.

Moreover Evenepoel did it in his first participation which made him very proud. Getting a chance to win and finish it in a beautiful way is a big and very special thing. This is a kind of proof for Evenepoel, that he can win big races in front of all big guns. Today I feel the best Remco is back, and pedaling my bike.

It’s very special to win a bicycle race at La Redoute, as it is one of my favorite climbs in road cycling. I’ve messaged my first coach, because we do a lot of training here – so this win is his too! As for this race, it is very difficult and nervous, driven at a very high speed. I started to feel pain in my leg at La Redoute. I realized that everyone has to suffer a bit, that it was time to give it a try and then look back to see the situation. When I found myself alone, I decided to go solo.

This was a difficult Classic period for my team. We have 19 wins leading up to the Classics season, so our 2022 is going well – but then the Classics aren’t doing well. Yesterday, in a pre-race meeting, our team CEO Patrick Lefevere told us that no matter what happens, we will remain calm, that this race will not be the end of the world. It was a beautiful gesture from Patrick, to reassure us by showing how much he trusts our team and his work.
