Manchester United are reportedly chasing the signature of Frenkie De Jong . This transfer has the potential to be one of the most expensive transfers this summer.
Since being appointed as Manchester United manager, Erik Ten Hag has asked the Red Devils management to bring in De Jong. The Barcelona midfielder is considered a key player so that United can play the game scheme desired by the manager.
But so far this transfer process is quite tough. Barcelona reportedly want a transfer fee of around 85 million euros for the midfielder’s transfer this summer.
If this transfer becomes a reality, De Jong will enter the list of the 10 most expensive transfers for Manchester United. Including the list of the most expensive midfielders bought by the Red Devils.
In their history, United had brought in a number of midfielders with expensive price tags. But most of them even flop at MU.

Marouane Fellaini is in the top 10 most expensive midfielders for Manchester United. The frizzy-haired midfielder was David Moyes’ only signing in the summer of 2013 for 32.4 million euros from Everton.
Fellaini strengthened MU for quite a long time. He made 177 appearances for the Red Devils, contributing 22 goals and 12 assists.
This figure is worse than his record at Everton, where he also appeared 177 times for the Toffees and scored 33 goals and 26 assists.
In the ranking of the nine most expensive midfielders Manchester United have ever bought is Morgan Schneiderlin. He was recruited from Southampton by Louis van Gaal for 35 million Euros.
Together with MU, the French national team player became a patient. He only dropped as much as 47 times in five years defending MU.
He also only scored one goal and one assist while defending MU. So he was released to Everton.
In the ranking of the eight most expensive midfielders ever bought MU is Ander Herrera. He joined the Red Devils in 2015 from Athletic Bilbao.
Throughout defending MU, Herrera can be said to be one of the favorite players of the Red Devils fans. Because he has great passion and always appears adamant throughout the game.
While defending MU, he was down in 189 total matches. He scored 20 goals and 27 assists for the Red Devils, which is quite a good record when compared to when he was at Bilbao, where he only scored 11 goals and 19 assists.
In the seventh place, the most expensive midfielder signed by Manchester United is Donny van de Beek. The midfielder was brought in by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer from Ajax Amsterdam in 2020.
Two seasons with the Red Devils, Van de Beek is difficult to bring out the best. He still struggles to adapt to the rhythm of the game in England, so he sits mostly on the bench.
But the midfielder is determined to improve his career at Old Trafford next season, as Erik Ten Hag projects him to play in the United first team.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan is in the sixth place for MU’s most expensive midfielder. He was recruited from Borussia Dortmund with a dowry of 42 million Euros.
In his first season with Manchester United, the player performed brilliantly. He helped United win the Europa League trophy in the 2016/17 season.
But in the second season his performance declined, and finally he was used by Jose Mourinho to barter with Alexis Sanchez.
In 2003, Sir Alex Ferguson made a big surprise in the transfer market. He signed one of the best midfielders in Serie A at the time, namely Juan Sebastian Veron from Lazio for a ransom of 42.6 million Euros.
Veron’s performance is actually not too bad. He scored a total of 11 goals and 14 assists from 80 appearances for the Red Devils, but that performance was considered a failure given the very expensive transfer fee at the time.
As a result, he was released by Manchester United after two seasons with Chelsea. Where the performance is also not encouraging.
Nemanja Matic is the fourth most expensive midfielder for Manchester United. He was bought by Jose Mourinho from Chelsea in 2017 for 44.7 million Euros.
In his inaugural season, he performed poorly where he played in almost all the matches played by the Red Devils. However, his performance began to be disrupted by injury after that.
He was mostly on the bench in the Solskjaer era, and he only returned to play in the United first team at the end of the Ralf Rangnick era.
Nemanja Matic is not the only expensive midfielder that Jose Mourinho has bought. At the start of the 2019/20 season, Manchester United signed Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk.
When defending the Ukrainian club, Fred did show a brilliant performance. But at MU, he underwent a slow adaptation, and his performance was not optimal because his position was shifted further back.
It was only at the time of Solskjaer that he showed a pretty good performance and got appreciation from the MU fans, even though his appearance was actually still fanciful.
Bruno Fernandes is the second most expensive midfielder ever signed by Manchester United. He was recruited from Sporting Lisbon for a ransom of 63 million Euros.
If you look at the other names on this list, Bruno can be said to be the best midfielder signed by Manchester United. His performance is commensurate with the price that must be paid MU.
He was the best MU player for two seasons, the choice of fans and players. He recorded 50 goals and 39 assists from a total of 126 appearances for the Red Devils.
Unfortunately his performance last season began to decline. So MU fans hope that Fernandes can rise again in the Ten Hag era later.
In 2016, Manchester United broke the world transfer record. They paid 100 million Euros to Juventus to bring back Paul Pogba.
This transfer can be said to be an irony. Because in 2012 Manchester United released Pogba to Juventus as a free agent and they had to pay a very high price to send him home.
MU’s grief is increasing because Pogba can be said to be a ‘bogus investment’ for them. For six years defending MU, the midfielder was difficult to play consistently.
He left Manchester United this summer as a free agent again, and has been linked with a return to Juventus. He also had time to look for trouble by throwing scathing comments to MU in his dokuemter film.
